Circus Lamp

This striking piece of circus art can provide colorful flair to any room in the house. So whether you're going for clown-around chic, or big-top fun, this look is anything but recycled.

What You'll Need:

Standing table-lamp
Yarn in different colors
Pound of beads
Coil of 22 gauge copper wire
Scissors
Mod-Podge
Brush
Color print-outs of vintage circus posters
Color paper tape

Directions:

1. First, lay strips of tape across the entire base of the lamp and wrap it around the bottom, overlap your stripes of tape until you've covered the whole base. This will give the base a colorful swirl look.
2. Cut out your circus art down to about 2" x 3" shapes. The smaller, the fewer air bubbles you need to smooth out with your finger. Then brush a layer of Mod Podge to the surface and apply your images, overlapping as you go. Brush another layer of Mod Podge to the surface after you're one to give it a finished sheen.
3. Twistie-tie a bead on the bottom so the rest of your beads don't fall off when you thread them onto the coil, then start wrapping it up the pole. Make a tight first coil at the bottom of the pole to ensure a secure start. Thread and wrap at the same time to see the effect as you go. When you reach the top, secure the beaded copper wire to the harp of the lamp.
4. For ultimate big top fun, I recommend that you finish off by striping your lampshade. First, strip your lampshade of it's boring old material. Then, take a strand of yarn still attached to the spool and tie it to the top of the bare lampshade frame. Wind your yarn around the skeleton frame until you've got a stripe, then tie a knot to the top of the frame again and cut the yarn. Repeat with different colors, until the entire lampshade is covered.
5. I find that this adds a little bit more va-voom to your already sexy lamp. Take 5"-61/2" pieces of yarn and a bead an knot the yarn with the bead facing out to the bottom of the shade. Having beads on the lampshade as well as the lamp, makes the shade harmonious in design with the rest of your circus masterpiece.
